Making Quality Invariable: Variable Valve Timing Machining

Challenge:

The customer requested a solution to machine and assemble a high volume, high mix family of automotive Variable Valve Timing (VVT) components. The machined components consisted of 3 unique aluminum die castings. In addition to machining, the part required precision assembly of a steel bushing into the machined housing.  The challenge was to maintain product segregation of the 3 unique part designs manufactured on shared capital equipment.

Solution:

We developed a flexible machining cell complete with all necessary poka-yokes to ensure product quality. After machining, the mixed parts are conveyed through a parts washer and processed through an automated assembly and pack-out operation. The assembly automation verifies part type and assembly quality.

Results:

World class PPM defect rates were achieved at competitive price by sharing capital equipment.
